What a day! I had the morning off so I decided to venture out and see what I could find. This year I hadn't found a complete artillery shell so I decided to go back to where I found all my shells last year and hunt with my 14 inch head to my Nautilus. I decided to dig every signal in this impact zone. Both of these signals did not sound good, but after digging down a foot on each the signal turned from ferrous to non-ferrous and I got that dual tone that I love to hear. By the time I left not only did I find a shell but I found two! Both of the shells are 10 pound Reed Parrotts. One of the 10 pound Read-Parrotts has a rare Boremann fuse in it! This is the second one I have found at this site. The first was found last year about this time. The other shell has a percussion fuse in it. I also found a Schenkl fuse - I just love these because they are dated Oct 16, 1861. I also dug another Va cuff but the front had long since been eaten away by the tannic acid in the soil and it crumbled as soon as it was exposed to air.
Whats surprising is I dug a Tombac buton right between the shells from a century before and from another great conflict. Both of these shells were in the same area I had already hunted before. Without the 14 inch head I know these shells would still be there. The first shell was down 2 and a half feet and the Boremann fused shell was down a whopping 3 and a half feet! This makes a total of six 10 pound Reed - Parrotts I have dug from this impact area!!!
I have also dug a 12 pound Boremann and an almost complete Hotchkiss. Needless to say I am right sore tonight but I will take this feeling any day!
