OK, so I have not been Metal Detecting all that long, and I do not get to go out very often. Well, I had gotten a new MD for Christmas and then not too long after I found a Civil War button. It was filthy, but I spent about 2 weeks carefully cleaning it up! I loved it.

Well, I had been out a few times, did not find too much. Well I decided to go out for a little bit today and I found this out in the woods...

I do not care if it is made out of aluminum! It is gonna keep me busy for the next few weeks just cleaning it up. Unfortunately in my excitement, I accidently pulled off the part that opens and closes. Regardless, I am going to have a LOT of fun just cleaning it. That is one of my favorite things about this hobby. (second only to actually finding it!)

Well done... looking forward to seeing it clean!

Re: I Love This Hobby!!

I feel lucky as heck!

I have a question. The side that is showing on the scan is of the back actually and what you are seeing is the part that came off (I just put it back for the scan). So I have a piece about the size of a silver dollar that is very encrusted, that is not attached. I was thinking of taking that piece and soaking it in Olive Oil like I did with my button. If it happened to be gold, would that damage it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: I Love This Hobby!!

Hello, & Welcome to the forum...
I don't know much about cleaning, or preservation, but I don't think that "Olive Oil" would hurt it...
From the green coloring on it, I would guess it to be either Brass, or maybe copper...
Either way, anything that old is a neat find, WTG!!!
Good luck, & Happy hunting~

Re: I Love This Hobby!!

Please... it's a watch!  Don't soak it in Olive Oil! The oil gets into everything and will seep out for years to come!

IMHO

Re-attack... after reviewing I see you only wanted to soak one piece... It will prolly work but the petina will also prolly be different from the rest of the piece after that.

I ain't no expert...

LOL, yea, I was not going to soak the whole watch :) The back cover came off so it is by itself. I wanted to just clean that part to see how it cleaned up.

The outside is cleaning it up nice, and I noticed that the entire hinge was corroded, so I decided to open the front. Unfortunately the elements got into it and it is pretty damaged. I can tell that it is a Worren but it is in real bad shape on the inside. I will post follow up pics :)

Nice find.

A hobby that is addicting and doesn't hurt you...excercise, fresh air and relaxing. ;D

Re: I Love This Hobby!!

Updated Pic. Will probably not clean it any more. I like it the way it is :) To bad the actual watch is trashed, still love it though!

Wow! Fantastic cleaning job.....Can I send you some of my hopeless finds...so you can turn them into treasure?? ;)

Nice cleaning job. Your pocketwatch looks like it might have been gold plated, gold itself doesn't tarnish or corrode, but gold plating can wear off and the material below will then start to react to the elements and the weather. I've found a few pocketwatches through the years (one spot yielded 3 of them), and not one of them was clean inside. I guess they didn't make many waterproof watches in the old days.
