I am starting to think the hematite opinions are right, as there is quite a bit of oxidation within the "bubbly" part. I didn't want to scratch it with sandpaper to verify, but one of my best friends is a geologist, and he'll be here in the morning to go hunting with me and confirm or deny that hypothesis.

So... what's the verdict?

My geologist "friend" didn't show up, and after 30 minutes I called him, and he said he woke up late and was on his way. (The plan was to meet at my house prior to going to the river to answer my rock questions.) He called me 40 minutes later and asked where I was... This guy went out to the river without me. So I sat on a couch for over an hour waiting on him and when I got to the river he had already been down and searching the stretch we planned on exploring for 40 minutes.
With that being said, I think it's Hematite, and I still think it is a travel hand hoe. I found a different one when I found all of those points the other day that is the same material but different shape/tool. Lol I'll grab a photo when I get home.

I hope you all can see the marks on this as well as I can. I never feel like photos do justice, but I'm pretty sure on these after finding this one. lol I may be wrong, but I trusted my gut (and my mechanical engineering knowledge) on everything else I've found, and they are all turning out to be right, so I have high hopes!




This is me attempting to show how there is a notch around the edge for each finger and a flake removed for the thumb. The "palm" area has significant deep striations that are similar to those on the worked edge, but harder to see as well without me understanding photo lighting. lol




I actually have a third too I just found in the unsorted items still in my backpack. It's smaller and has a rounded working edge for maybe scraping a hemp stalk or something. I'll graph photos of it after I clean it up. All of them have oxidation in the crevices, so I'm still thinking hematite. They feel slightly lighter than chert, but heavier than expected. My brain expects them to have the density of burnt wood.

This one sure fits the hand but its just a natural erosion stone. I brought it home anyway lol. Good luck in the field.

...if that is comparable to what I have, I need to hire a photographer... lol I appreciate the opinions, but after the second and third find, I'm 99% sure the conchoidal fractures and grooves are not natural. We'll see though. I am going to have the local archaeologist/flintknapper check them out later in the week with a bunch of the other projectile points and chert tools I found with these, so hopefully he'll know more.
