I went to about seven banks today and bought 220$ that a teller had in those spun rolls from the fed. I was happy to see them because I have had such terrible luck with anything hand rolled. I didn't get much, just one 65, and this 1980p that I think is 40% silver. when I saw the edge after opening the roll, I thought it was a 90% and then noticed the date. I then weighed the coin (11.5 grams). did they make 40% silver coins in 1980? is their any way that this `coin isn't silver? I noticed that someone must have searched it because of the green line across the face, but it is a bit heavy for a normal half. Any impute would be great.

Hate to say it- think it's clad.
I found a clad that had a total silver edge.
Under a bright light the copper did show through.
Hope I'm wrong!

PatPall - I think Tim is right. I am not expert by any means but I don't think that coin is silver either. Maybe one of the more knowlegdable CRH'ers can add to this. Good luck in your future hunts.....keep plugging. That silver is out there waiting on ya!!

Thanks for your imput. It's the first time that I've found a coin that looks so much like silver. I bet it's pritty common to find those tricky ones. You guys definitly know more about these tricky ones than I do so thanks again for your comments

I too found an odd 1980p half dollar last week, the face did not look real silver but the rim was bright silver, to bright. It had the rim of a canadian coin. I don't know how or why? Is there a way to make halves look like this? I've also found a few stamped halves with the two dates on each side of JFK. These also had silver looking rims.

Some coins at first glance do look silver. It's always dissapointing to see one, and think "got me one!" and see that it isn't. :P

i can't believe dat coin made it to california already. i had marked it wit da green magic marker while back. good lookin out. keep yo eyez peeled fo any mo marked cross da face like dat. most likely they come from north memphis. peace!

Yuk. I know exactly what it feels like to open a roll and see a bright rings, only to find that it is a total fiat clad. The worst for me are the early 70 coins. A LOT of them look like they are 40% ers.

Is that a rim ding or is it a piece of solder? You can also use a loupe to look at the area between the letter in the motto. If it was plated you'll see the difference.

Does it sound the same as a 40% when you drop it on a hard surface?

you seem very knowledgable about halves. Yes that is a ding on the edge of the coin. I don't know what you are referring to " loupe" but it sound similar to a 40 % when dropped on a hard surface. what is killing me about the coin is the weight. 11.4-11.5 grams seems to be just to heavy for a clad coin. what do you think that could be? Thanks for sharing your knowledge 65gt.

automatic translation: ghetto speak = real English

I can not believe that coin made it to California already. I marked it with a green magic marker a while back. good lookin out. (untranslatable)

Keep your eyes open for any more with that mark on the face. They probably came from North Memphis. Good will to all!

do you know the weight of that in grains?
it will help a lot

A loupe is a magnifying glass. If you look at the reeding the coin should show signs of plating. Also look at the letters of the motto. If it is plated the edges of the letters will slope into the field and not look like a sharp cliff.

Sometime people spray the coins with silver paint. You could try to put it in acetone to see if that changes anything.

I still have no idea what it could be.
