It's very thin copper with tiny flecks of silver left on it. There is no obvious place for a missing tang and even when new it is way too thin to be a buckle. It does have the shape though. Any guesses? decor.webp

Wow. I never considered that. It's possible it was part of something like that.

Any attachment points on the back? Could be the face of a sash buckle.

I saw your ruler and now I can't get Johnny Cash's "I've Been Everywhere" out of my head.

It does seem like the decoration from the face of something. It's super thin. No attachment points at all. Its just plain and flat on the flip side. It does seem ornamental though doesn't it DCMatt?

It's really hard to tell the thickness from my photo but, it's super thin. It would not stand up to the bending required for one of those hair deals. I am going to keep the thing you suggested in mind because it's very possible I may run into one of these hair things in the future and I will know instantly what it is because showed me they exist. Thank you for giving it a go toasted.

Maybe an inlay for a wood piece of some kind, wood removed in the shape of your piece leaving the center intact, like for a gunstock or piece of furniture.

With sunburst design and silver wash it was definitely made to be seen.

This is what I had in mind:
