I think the "S" was proof only. P & D were circulation strikes.

My guess is that someone electroplated it to look like silver. According to the Red Book, all 1976 bi-cent halves that were silver were made in San Francisco mint. "S" mint mark. The San Fran mint also made the Proofs.

Ahh...yeah that's what I thought. Guy musta silver plated it.
