I've tried to wean myself from a TID detector with little success. I tried listening to the tones with an assorted collection of trash on my Tesoro Sidewinder. I thought either in discriminate mode or pinpoint mode I would be able to discern differences in tone. I hear none at all, I can tell depth and size a bit, but no ID info really. Certainly a screw cap gives a louder response, but sounds identical to a dime when I move the coil closer. I know I'm not tone deaf, because I could hear the difference between a nickel and tab on a bounty hunter machine. I tried this with my fishers (that have ID), and from the audio couldn't hear a difference as well (well obviously I could in multi-tone mode).

So, here's my question, can one hear a difference on other Tesoros, maybe the Sidewinder is different? I can't imagine with time I'll hear a difference, when I'm trying it out side-by-side. I'd rather listen to audio only, it seems more fun that looking at a TID all the time. I just read the tip on Tejon, where you can set the tone a certain way and get more info.

So how do you avoid digging trash?
a) You don't, you dig everything above iron
b) listen to the audio (and what do you discern on which machine?)
c) You dig everything silver and above
d) Play disc jockey (move disc around a lot to discern)
e) other?

Depending on what your hunting for - dig it all. You never know what you might miss and/or what you will dig. That's one of the best parts of md'ing. On those off days when I'm feeling a bit lazy around a park or such, I will usually thumb the disc.
