ID Help, Old Rifleman Medal???

Found this at a farm house that used to be a clinic back in the late 1800s. Not sure what this is, but it looks to be a military medal. Any ideas?

Ok so there's nothing on the back but with a little cleaning, our rifleman is looking more like Davy Crockett. Any guesses?
