Grewingkia. It is a cone shaped fossil from the Upper Ordovician period. Widespread in North America. It had no method of attachment . Its heavy cup probably sank into the mud, and new mud then settled around the cup, with luck, at the same rate at which the cup grew upward. quoted from National Audubon Society field guide.
