For some reason I want to say its part of an old automotive or tractor distributor.

maybe an old gas cap or oil cap, radiator cap

I was thinking thermostat, but I can’t seem to find a picture of one like it to confirm.

The last photo shows adjustment teeth and two separate adjustment plates. The other two show base pins that would fit into something to keep the mechanism from turning.:icon_scratch:

My first impression was that it might be a thermostat, but I see no coil spring that is usually used to open and close it. My second thought was it could be a door knob lock... I don.t know why I thought that!

Maybe an electric key switch, or even an ignition switch?

It has sort of a thick felt gasket on it.

I reminds me of a glove box lock. Turn to open, slam shut, a key might even lock it shut?
