Hi :hello: I have come here to get a professional opinion I know NOTHING about geology or rocks, maybe I should have listened at school. I bought this about 12 years ago from a shop, its kind of sharp looks like a stalagmite maybe? Is that the right word? It shines multi colours when light is on it. That's all the information I have.

Cheers!!!!!!:heart::heart::heart::heart::heart:

I'm not quite sure what the rock is you have there, but most likely NOT a stalagmite.

Stalagmites usually are calcium based columns which grow from the bottom up, and
have to do with water coming from above.

A stalactite is the calcium based minerals above the stalagmite in which it drips below,
which kind of looks like an icicle.

Forgot to say that both stalagmites and stalactites are mostly found in caves where water from
above them drips down into the caves.

Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico is a good example of a cave with both.

Magnetic? Can it scratch a knife? Google streak test & do one.

Hmm interesting, thanks alot for your help MarytRocks, still baffled as to what this is, the picture shows a purple shine but it also shines green yellow red like a rainbow when bright light is put on it, ive googled all the possible things and descriptions I can think of but no images relate to this at all.

Really hope someone knows what this is, wouldnt mind breaking part of and sending it to whoever ID's it either :)

Thanks for your help, this is not magnetic at all, heavily scratches a stainless steel knife and I think im doing the streak test wrong as it makes no dust it just slowly cracks its very hard but brittle also.

Can't be certain, but could possibly be Stephanite ore.

I don't want to throw ya off but this is calcite. I should have a size reference but took the picture for another reason. It's small, about 1.5" What's that, 3mm? OK, try a tad shorter than someone''s thumb.
Hey, no one taught metrics in my school.

Well this is the closest I have seen so far! Still lots of differences though, thanks for sharing that mate!

*hehe* No, that should be "cm". Exact conversion for 1.5" would be 3.81cm or 38.1mm. ...Or something like that. :tongue3:

EXTREMELY similiar to Covellite think I might go with that!

I'm inclined to take Rasputin's evaluation of Covellite. Calcite does not show metallic coloration's hvacker and your sample from me shows two or more minerals besides calcite. If that is calcite that is showing structure ?? hrm.

When I first the purples I thought bornite. I'll look at covellite.
