I did little more digging (the net) and found references to to prehistoric volcano effigy incense burners discovered in Mexico. They were made out of pottery however rather than stone. I also found some stone effigy incense burners with holes not much larger than the hole in your pictures. Incense burners documented in Ohio Hopewell sites seems to me to make that a[emoji6] reasonable consideration. I'm not suggesting , nor have I suggested "what it is" only what it possibly could be. I'm not saying "no" to anything, just trying to think with an open mind, but not so open that my brain falls out.[emoji6]

I agree with Joshua, looks like some kind of tree stump, palm related...I'd post it over on the fossil forum
The Fossil Forum
If it's a fossil, they WILL know.

It also may have been collected/used by NAs, for the same reason you brought it home, there's just
likely no way to know for sure.

it is a strange one for sure...the way it has such a flat square base and that hole on top..a real head scratcher

I think I'll do that Buckleberry. It sure has me stumped...

Maybe some kid's social studies fair centerpiece? He lost and got angry and chucked the volcano, that his dad stayed up all night making, into the pasture only to be found years later... That thing is weird. I can't wait to hear what it is.

This held something that the owner did not want to tip over. My opinion based on the size of the base. Cross or candle holder like gator said is what i would think..........GTP
