Can anyone tell me any more about the use of this item? Found on a documented Civil War site. Date on item - 1863.

I can see that it says PATENT and maybe 1863.
If the size is correct (small) I believe it is a adjuster from the back of trousers, like the second one down on the left:

Artifact size to scale. Union button found on same site, as well as dropped lead (on right)
