I thought it would be interesting to see what the weight equivalent of my 8 reale would be in terms of cut pieces and hammered sixpences. I was quite surprised to see how many of each it took to produce the same weight. It took 24 misc cut pieces and 10 hammered sixpences to match up with the weight of one 8 reale coin. That's a huge numbers of coins in each case, but unfortunately I can only count the 8 reale as one in my seasonal total :'(.

wouldn't mind any of theses piles !
They each have something special.

This is a cool post Bill. It's wild how many pieces of cut silver or hammered sixpences it takes to equal that big 8 reale. The real question is, would you rather find 6 hammered sixpences in a hole, or a single 8 reale? Haha. That's an awesome pile of cut silver on that scale too.

Interestingly enough the 8 reale I have (bought, not found) is also an 1808. I weighed it when I got home too and it was 26.96g. I googled and found these things varied by a couple grams. I had no idea. George also mentioned to me that both of yours were a little different. Everyone of them is unique.

Since I dont have any cut pieces, I think I would be just as happy finding a cut. Or a 1/2 reale Cob!! Lol.

Ok now you're just showing off Bill. Glad I got to hold a few of those. Cheers

That weight is 99% of the prescribed weight for that coin.
Congrats on finding such an awesome example of that coin.
Don..........

Great post up Bill, liking it!

When I saw your initial post for the 8 reale, I immediately wondered how many of your previous Spanish silver finds it would take to equal the weight of that honker. Its really cool that you demonstrated it in photos. Congrats again on finding a bucket list coin. That bucket list must be getting seriously small now!

Awesome, and your list of colonial coins found is amazing.

:occasion14: I bet you smile constantly :notworthy:

NICE SILVER ROUND UP THERE MR. BILL .....

Nice collection there and cool idea for a post. I will have to go see one in person some day at a coin shop to appreciate it's heft.

Interesting post Bill. I thought it would take a lot of cut pieces, no idea it would take that many hammered coins. Again great find.

When you put that in perspective like that...very impressive! again great job Bill

Showoff, braggart came to mind first, after that jealously.
Good for you Bill, keep digging em boy!

I could stare at your New World hammered silver coins all day long. How much did that Lord Baltimore weigh?
