I'm Back, With A CW Trade Token, NICE Braided LC, and a Tribe o' Injuns

Hello Everyone! Long Time, No Post!

There's been a perfect storm of factors keeping me mostly out of the field and off these boards lately: lots of work, home projects, tick season, and some LONG days now that me and the wife are both back to working full-time and taking care of the little Manley (who's now 3 months old!). I hope everyone else is enjoying their spring...

I did manage to get out a little here and there, and I'll post some more stuff later to catch y'all up. I felt like this weekend's hunt merited its own post:

Since the tick menace has driven me out of my usual woods, my spots are a lot thinner, to say the least. I hadn't gone back to my old park, where I first started learning to swing the XLT, in quite a while, so I figured I'd give it a shot again, and try to see if my greater experience and settings tweaks can make the place productive again. The area has been a hotbed since the mid-1800s, and I'd found a few LCs and relics before, so it's always a decent bet.

Focusing on a 50x50 plot of ground, I worked a pretty strict grid over the span of two days, a few hours here and there, listening around the pulltabs and stuff for deeper signals in the 5-6 inch range. I'd then dig all these. I ended up digging a lot less trash and bagged some real nice coins. Looks like I hit a pocket of CW-era activity. Here's the tally:

  • 1844 Braided Hair Large Cent (nice shape, for a change!)
  • 1863 Civil War Trade Token -- "Frederick Rollwagen Jr. - #587 - Third Avenue and 20 & 21 - Centre Market - N.Y."
  • Four Indian Heads -- Two 1860s "fatty" IHs (rough dates); an 1864; and an 1892 (also pictured is a 1906 from a different dig last weekend)

Again, enjoy the spring. I hope to "see" you all again soon!

Cheers,
B

The large cent looks great, as does the 1892 IH. I'd be happ with that Civil War token too. Nice finds.

Nice to hear from you, Tom. How've you been?

Yeah, the change in season is rough, because I was VERY happy with my fall/winter spots, so I was very sorry to have to shelve them for a while. I went to the fields where Joe G. and I hunted so much, and had to leave after about 30 mins because the ticks were so bad. I hit the old park almost out of desperation, so it was a real pleasant surprise to do so well. This place is super trashy so you have to be pretty selective about what you dig. Plus, the LCs I'd found there in the past came up in pretty rough shape, so I was amazed to find one in such nice condition. It was a deep one, too, which is fun! ;D

Thanks again, and let's get out together soon. You free on Memorial Day weekend? I'm hunting Saturday and Monday. PM me if you're interested.

Cheers,
B

Nice Digs Brendan! I'd say that's a productive day and the LC looks pretty good! Tom and I couldn't believe it when Rick pulled one out around 2 weeks ago. Off a main drag from a small "green".

Nice IH's too looks like most cleaned up well. We have to get together. However, I fully expect to be in the water from this point forward. Most definitely Memorial day weekend (rain or shine).

I always like to see those Injuns come up. They may not be worth a fortune but they will bring a smile to any digger. I could take you to the exact spot where I got my first one all those years ago. Good job!

WTG Brendan, you've come back with a bang! I've got the biggest Ape on my back for those IH's. Swing by again one weekend. We can all try our luck here in the city. Congrats on those coins.......that copper is in fine shape!

Welcome back B.
You came back in style too. Congrats on some awesome coins and that cool token too. :icon_king:
I know what you mean about being driven out of the woods. I think I'll just stay out until fall hits. If there are old coins to be found, they aren't going anywhere.
Thanks for the post,
MM

I would love a crack at that park. I am not very selective at all.

Can I bring my shovel?

Haha. Be my guest. I was going to have one of my nephews help me clean the ground up and dig all those pulltabs, so feel free! I'd say no on the shovel though...

Thanks, KindaFound. Beats another wheat or memorial any day, right? I've got 18 IHs so far this year -- I think I had three all of last year -- so I've been real happy.

Thanks, Miner. Nice to be back! I wish I could say that everything in life is as much fun as this! Thanks for the congrats.

As for the woods, isn't it kinda crazy how nice weather is actually a disadvantage if you hunt woods like we do? Almost every day has been nice lately, yet most of my spots are off limits. :( Man, I would love for someone to invent the ultimate tick repellent... [sigh] Too bad you're dealing with the same. My only advice is to do what I just did: Find a nice old town park or village green where the bugs aren't an issue. Plenty of old coins for the determined shooter! Where have you been hunting now that the warm weather's here?

Talk to you soon bud.

Cheers,
B

Thanks, Ric. I know you can appreciate. What do you mean, you've got a monkey for IHs? You haven't found any? I'd be amazed were that the case. If so, all I can say is dig all those deep screwcap signals you come across....

I'd LOVE to get out with you sometime soon, for sure. Keep me posted and I'll do the same.

Thanks again, and take care!
