I'm pretty sure this is my First Key Date 1869/9 IH Penny!

Went out for a few hours to a new permission with Deadsy. We've done some serious research and the place dates back to around 1820. We found a bunch of relics but nothing other than a suspended clip to write home about. In this general area within a mile or two we have had wonderful luck and have been very grateful of the sweet finds! As we started digging garbage the signals started opening up. I got a great mid tone peaking to lower high tone near some iron clear and consistent while using the 5x8 on the At pro. Dug down about 6-7" and behold a 1869/9! You can still kinda make out LIBERTY! The top left of the 9 you can see has been re punched and u can also tell on the bottom tail of the 9!!! I did the best I could lining up my iPhone with my loupe! Boy am I pumped!!!! Thanks for reading fellas and ladies!!! Good luck out there!

Ok got much better ones...I noticed the bottom of the left side of the 1 is longer and different looking!

I noticed that as well and tried doing some online research to no avail! It is possible that the coin is the product of a Die with a Repunched Date that the Mint Employees actually Re-cut the Date afterwards to remove the Overdate due to the repunching. I state this because the alignment of the Date with the Indian's bust and alignment with the denticles, appears as best I can tell, to be the same or near the same as the Snow-1 Variety shown on NGC's website (US 1869 18/18 Indian Cents 1859-1909 1C Coin Varieties) but without the visible extra "18" Date Digits. I do not have reference books on the Indian Head Cent Varieties and I just found that there are a lot more Varieties for the 1869 Indian Head Cent than I was aware of previously. Sorry that I did not know or find this out before now! It is possible that your' coin is one of the other Varieties listed at the link below but without more research and finding pics of every one, it may be hard to pin down. If you, myself or anyone else on Treasure Net can figure out that the coin has a high likelihood of being a Variety, then it might be best to send the coin to an Coneca Variety Attributer for attribution (CONECA Atrribution Process). Although it is not recommended to do any type of cleaning on any coin with the possibility of high value, I believe that your' coin may actually warrant addressing the corrosion on it. Otherwise, there may be no way to actually attribute it even if it is a Variety! If you attempt to clean the coin in any way, please be careful and do not do anything that will remove any of the toning/patina if at all possible. Normally I would recommend a coin conservation service such as which is provided by PCGS, NCS and possibly ANACS but it is doubtful they would provide the service due to the corrosion and damage on the coin.

Nice find on the 1869 Indian. I don't see it as a 9/9. It's a great coin still and all as the 1869 is a rare date.

thanks Donnie...the pic u posted is an early die state....im gonna take Franks advice and see what we could do with this....i know for sure its not a regular 69...i have on good-4 69 in my collection and its not the same...but well see what happens...def is a rare one either way!

I have continued to slowly sift through a few more Varieties but still have not come across a match. I did find a site that I had forgotten about which was in my' Favorites of my' old PC before the motherboard fried and have pasted the link to it below. Once complete, one may able to find which Variety your' coin is without having to purchase reference books. However, at this time, you may want to purchase some reference books because I know the suspense is probably eating more at you, than it is me! The following link will help but look for publications by Rick Snow and Kevin Flynn and/or Breen and there are others as well but the first two should suffice: http://www.fly-inclub.org/LL20-1 PCGS registry.pdf

One key to focus on is that the Date on your' coin is unlike most of the Snow Varieties as it's Date is considered either a "Far Date" since it is further away from the Indian's bust or "Near Date" since it is closer to the rim and denticles than most of the other Varieties. I am sorry but I am not sure which of these designations they have given the positioning of the Date on your' coin or on Indian Cents for that matter. While there is extra thickness on the "69" in the Date of your' coin, I believe it may actually fall into one if the Varieties such as "1/1", "18/18" or "1869/1869" but not the "1869/69" Variety.
