I'm stoked, found my first "Buff"

Been hunting a carnival/fair grounds, about 4 acres, since early spring and have pulled lots of clad. It's hard for me to believe that after all the swinging I've done (probably 20 + hours) the best I've done is a couple of 50's wheat's, no silver, or no jewelry (gold or silver). Today the patience payed off I finally found a "buff" and my first "buff" to boot. I was so stoked. I've been tecting about 13 months and have found lots of clad and a fair share of rings, but the "buff" is a "first" accomplished. I hope to have many more but this was a nice first. I've included some pics, and the coin itself is not in great shape but I can read the date, 1921 unknown mint location.

Thanks for looking in advance

Congratulations on the buffalo. Looks like a "d" mint mark. See reverse under the words five cents. Looks like a "d" to me.

Re: I'm stoked, found my first "Buff"

Not bad looking one two. Congratulations! :icon_sunny: You might not think it's in good shape but those nickels take a beating in the ground. Probably 1/3 to a 1/2 of the Buffalos I find don't have dates or if you can read the date it's very, very hard to read.

Congrats! Great Coin. I just found my first a couple of weeks ago. No date visible.
Nice Find! Nice First!

Re: I'm stoked, found my first "Buff"

Hello,
Very nice find. Only P & S minted nickels were made in 1921, and I can make out the "S" fairly well.
Full horn on the buffalo, so when it was lost it was in VF or better condition. As a ground find, it is just a filler as far as condition goes, but it is a "KEY" coin. I have only owned one VG-F example, and I have collected coins for many years. My 2006 Krause catalog starts the pricing at $65. If we want to dream, a perfect mint state coin lists for over $8000.00 A filler ought to be worth $20 or so?
That's one heck of a first find!

Re: I'm stoked, found my first "Buff"

That is awesome for a first Buffalo to get a key date one! 8) Just my opinion, I would refrain from cleaning it any further so as not to lose any value possible. In the 2009 Redbook they list for 70. in G4 condition, I believe it would fetch at least a 50. dollar bill. But in my case I would keep it as key dates are of course very hard to come by when detecting. In my 30 years of detecting my only key date Buffalo is a 1914-D and I was very happy to find it! Congratulations on your find!

Also an interesting note, only 1,557,000 minted.

Finding your first Buff is always a rush. . . especially when there's still a date that you can read

May you find many more,
