I'm the Only One to Find One of These This Month (Year?)
First time at the new 1897 site, Saturday I think. Dug up a '28 wheatie and couple of Zincolns; a pretty old (40's or 50's) open-cockpit race car toy for the owners' smart little 5-year-old dude; and this Whatsit--which had a dangerous brooch-looking pin setup and "Patented June 30, 1868" on the back.
I have now learned how to look up an invention by the week patented. It takes a while to wade through 112 of 'em, but finding this thing was fun!
The inventor should be credited for the robust design and materials; the clock-sprung drum part that remains works fine and rebounds from either direction when rotated--after 100-plus years underground!!
