Re: I'm trying to grow a giant Pumkin! Weight estimate

Had a " feeder vine split " Hey .... I'm new at this :laughing7: .
I did some emergency surgery . Got a fan going to keep it dry . Some fungicide . I cut the roots under the vine , so it doesn't get any worse , I should of done it sooner , but I was afraid to mess with it . She's still growin , but not as fast .
42 days till the Pumpkinfest Weigh off .

She's still growin . It's 10 feet / 4 inches in circumference now . We are a little worried about the hurricane coming this way . And I am also worried about how to get it into the back of my little truck next month for the weigh-off .

Re: I'm trying to grow a giant Pumkin! New Update !

If very high winds are expected -- Build a larger frame around it using 2x4 posts and top rail and cover it with landscape fabric and/or tarp for a couple of days. You can easily staple material to wood, but run strip of duct tape before nailing/stapling to better protect it from high winds and flapping in the breeze.

Go find someone with a bobcat (loader unit) and use a Padded Sling to lift it. Or standard tractor with scoop on front. Couple straps in a square pattern under pumpkin tied with rope to form lifting cradle, wrap with some kind of material or blanket to protect it.
Also -- DO NOT CUT VINE -- stick plant into 5 to 25 gal. container and transplant to go with pumpkin. 5-Gal bucket or find soft drink mixing plant - 25 gal. syrup containers are good (cut off top). Will loose major amount of water, and weight, once vine stem is cut/broken off.

Re: I'm trying to grow a giant Pumkin! New Update !

Looks great mo!!
If you do it again, try the following to avoid putting stress on that vine. Some folks even bury the vine with fertile soil for more nutrient dispersal. Note: put the board under it before it gets too big.
