Just posted the other day about how poor Constar fishing was in my area. Walked in to the neighborhood Walmart and found these. Sorry goys I'm not standing in front shooting pics. Too many people, too close, that could say "Oh that's mine" I grabbed and walked calmly away. When I was safe distance away I pulled my hand out of my pocket and got my second surprise. Now that I had to get a picture of. See if you catch it. No not the missing finger! I've known about that for 69 years.

Why, when, and how do you think someone made those 1943 pennies silver? They are coated somehow of course. There are wear spots, the S mint mark looks a bit filled in. But those pennies seem to be in mighty nice condition. Wish you could see them in person. They look good.

Looks like someone dumped a set of all three mints steel cents back into circulation. Makes you wonder why they would do that. You used to see a lot of those reprocessed sets of all three mints for sale.

Yes they are coated... with Zinc... this is how they were made.

The Zinc being still intact makes your finds cool.

What would have been REALLY cool is if they were copper... OR the date was 44.

Yes they are coated... with Zinc... this is how they were made.

So as I now THINK I understand it all 1943 pennies were steel with zinc coating. If they stayed in circulation the zinc wore off and they had the flat dark grey color I was used to seeing. These may have been saved for whatever reason and then cashed in when grandma died, or some other reason of course.

A lot of these were replated in later years and sold in sets. If they are really shiny, they are most likely replated.

Very shiny. But I notice on the reverse and obverse of the S and the no mint mark coins that the plating is wearing through. The S looks like typical steel, but the other looks a bit coppery. Not very likely at all, right?

I wouldn't dare say for sure from pictures but I don't think these ones are replated. Not a lot of value either way, but definitely more value if they are not reprocessed. The steel cents are very interesting, I'd put them in holders and keep them.
