that one actually looks pretty mild compared to some. some have spikes and look pretty medieval
 

This is why I love cows,they sacrifice so much for us unwillingly so we can have steak and milkshakes. I never knew such an invention existed. This is one reason I love metal detecting, because you get to research ordinary objects and learn in the process. Nice find.
 

Thanks for the compliments guys and ladies. In further researching this device, I learned that the little metal points were facing away from the calf's nose, so as to poke mama cow in the udder and make her shy away from the calf. This one is tame, as jewelerguy said, compared to the macabre spiked models of an earlier age. Happy Hunting, Sub
