Before John Deason and Richards Oated found the Welcome Stranger Nugget. They mined gold for many years in several different gold areas. The first gold claim was at place where many cornish miners gathered. Named St Just Point after a place in cornwell UK .Most of the camp was scattered for several mines on a hight just above the Derwent Creek. Today while working my way on the flat looking for new sites and old camps i found one which i missed. Yes been over this ground before but got lazy and didn,t go near a junky area behind a dam wall. dam was a catchment for clean rain water as the creek water was thick with clay washed in by the working miners.Only covered about 60 by 60 feet. Target madness well not quite ,all modern rubbish is only in the mulch or first inch. All the old relics and gold if found in the hard clay pan. Called a "Shine" means to remove the first 2 inches and then put your md over again. If is in the clay its old. Found a button ,broken locket, clay pipe, bullet, few shards and 3 grams of gold sitting under the relics at about 20 inches.
