Went hunting with the wife on the opposite end of a 1679 land patent where I'd recently dug the cut Pine tree Shilling. Not necessarily expecting much as the place is absolutely loaded with can slaw, I was knocked off my feet by my very 1st find. Retrieving the 85 Deus signal from some serious depth out pops this magnificent Vesica buckle. Whitehead #418 but this one blows the specimen in that book away. Never found even a piece of one of these before. I really am stunned by the way she cleaned up. I mean, dayum! I'm stoked. lol. My wife dug a seal matrix which shows "25". Quite a fantastic item itself. We also dug a small fist full of buttons, a few buckle pieces and I got a really old 17th century leather ornamental. Clearly this place can pop up something special so we'll work it more thoroughly this winter. Its a mucky mess right now with all the rain we've had. But easy digging. I also found a King William III halfpenny (SPENT!) & a couple indians, wheats and a buffalo nickel. Not bad digging these later era finds in between the really old stuff!

Thanks Vino. I had to use my wifes acct to bump the thread B4 it fell off the page as there was no interest. Amazing find to me but to each his own. Gotta be a scarce find in the states and the condition is about as good as one could hope for. So glad I didnt slice it in half with the shovel.

You cant ask for any better.
Condition, scarce.
If I didn't know better I would think you were in England.
Congrats again.
Glad you bumped it!!

Looks like you had another amazing day.
That buckle is very nice. You don't see many with that kind of detail.
And old.. Well, you don't see many older than that dug in the states.
Well done. :occasion14:

My man!!!! That is one of the nicest buckles I have ever seen. Prob only about 8 of us will truly appreciate it but that is for sure a very scarce find buddy. Man you really get into the super early stuff. Makes me want to load up the canoe and risk my life to try to get to a very old very secret very treacherous site lol. I would much rather find that buckle over a cob. Maybe not an 8R cob but basically any other. I hope you do a year end wrap up cause I know it's got Mass silver and 17th century cobs and beautiful buckles. All things I love. Great job buddy

Another killer hunt gwdigger! It's frustrating something like this would fall off the page, but with all the great finds flooding in this past week it figures. That buckle is fantastic... great patina on it.

Fantastic find. Makes you wonder who wore the buckle and where it was made. Its been sitting in the ground for a long time waiting for you to find it! Great way to end the year. Congrats!

Oh wow! Wow! That buckle is pretty much something not seen in the "new world". I mean scarce!!! I have a dream about finding one of them buckles after seeing a few in person. Congrats on that, dare I Say, sexy buckle?!?! Yep, I said it! Lol

Man that's about as old as it gets on this side of the ocean! Superb buckle, congrats!

Great looking buckle Gary. I'very dug several of those over the years, but yours is an exquisite example. Love that seal matrix too.

I have to admit that I know nothing about the buckle and the history around it but WOW!!!!! That thing it OUTSTANDING!!! With the caliber of the members on here chiming in on it that MUST be a VERY special find!! I doubt I ever find one here in IND but damn I'll keep looking. The history you all find up your way keeps my fire lit!!!! Thanx to all of you... CONGRATZ&HH.....

Wow!!! Incredible buckle and other colonial finds! Congratulations! It's amazing the history we east coast guys can get a handle of in the right locations. You're a fantastic researcher and idol to me! Let's make 2016 the best year ever!

do it!!!

Thanks for the comments. So glad it was seen. I know Joey & Bill had found these because I'd seen them listed but in 25 years of digging none had shown themselves in my diggings. I searched the UK finds pages and although several are listed there none of them were in this condition.

Yes, I've seen your boxes of finds and remember there was more than one of these. I've spent a lot of time looking at the Whitehead book so I knew exactly what it was when dug. Do you think the seal matrix is 17th century? The reason I ask is when permission was granted by the farmer he claimed someone researching area history came up years before convinced the counties 1st courthouse briefly stood on this hill in the late 17th century. The matrix looks to be of a clerical nature and a courthouse could be a place for a set of various numbered seals. Its made of the same whitish metal that the buckle and ornamental are made from. It only looks dark and yellowish due to being wet and held under an old 60 watt bulb for the photos.
