Were the stems made of clay? Pretty sure it isnt clay. Unless clay stems were fired?

It tries to hint of a slate pencil sea urchin spine ,but is north of it's native Indo-Pacific range?
Would have been human drilled if it is.
I acquired one far inland , so they can travel......
