Very interesting indeed. Taylor was President 1849-50. The Whitman Massacre in Oregon took place in 1847 - they were missionaries and some of the first white settlers in the interior of Oregon Territory. One wonders if the painted portrait of Taylor was part of some treaty or reconciliation to pacify the Cayuse people. The massacre took place near Walla Walla; The Dalles is quite some distance away.
