Indian Maidens, Pitchforks and Parking Brakes

No matter what kind of detector you are using or how good you may think you know your equipment, somehow or another you WILL be surprised by one find or another whenever you go detecting. I kind of like that actually, being surprised from time to time that is. Oh sure, it’s nice to dig up coin after coin after coin, but it’s those targets that you THOUGHT were coins and turn out to be something out of the ordinary that make each outing an adventure. My adventure today certainly provided a couple of surprises. Actually, today’s hunt was the second half of the same hunt, or site anyway. There was quite a gathering at a neighboring county park amphitheater on the 4th of July. The people gathered to watch performers and listen to music under the sun and stars and fireworks. They congregated on their blankets, lawn chairs, and simply on the grass, under and around the shade trees on the hillsides surrounding the stage. I wasn’t there, but I saw photos taken by a friend who was. The photos had me itching to go detecting on the site the very next day. Now after seeing hundreds of people spread out like that at the park I figured I’d find a few coins and things at least. And I did, but the coins I found were mostly OLDER losses, not the ones from the night before. I only managed to get in about an hour and a half hunting on the first half of the trip, Monday evening of the 5th. I didn’t get back until This morning to continue hunting. Monday it was HORRIBLY hot and humid, even in the evening. Today it was warm and sunny, but not hot and certainly less humid. The ground was considerably softer too after rain showers the day before. I got an early start this morning and called it quits by about 11:30 because I had promised my wife I’d take her to lunch, and a movie. Got to LOVE the Minnions... but that’s a different story. <grin>
The first half of the hunt at the Amphitheater was amazing in itself. I found , and I mean DUG UP, over $7.00 in coins, all the coins but for two pennies were quarters! As with any large outdoor gathering of course, there were other things left, lost and there to be found by anyone simply looking down, as in while detecting. Besides lots and lots of pull tabs there were quite a few foil wine bottle “caps”. Guess someone was having a bit more than soda at the party huh?

Tabs n Caps.webp

The second half of the hunt, today, had eyeball finds too. Today I found several pairs of specs be they sunglasses or readers or whatever spread out over the area. All were broken in some fashion or another. Of course I picked up all the Coke Rewards caps I found too... Brownie Points!

You might have noticed a shiny little lady in that last picture. I found one lone Sacagawea Dollar coin this morning. I dug it up. It was so dirty that it was hard to be sure just what kind of coin it was at first, but a little brillo pad and some elbow grease cleaned up the Indian Maiden just fine. Ewww Now I got some coin connoisseurs cringing out there for sure! “BRILLO PAD” on a coin? <laughing> Yeah, well I wouldn’t have done that to anything other than a modern clad coin trust me. And to be a stickler for accuracy, Little Miss Sacagawea was NOT a maiden, at least not as depicted on the coin. Note the Papoose! <wink wink> Anyway, big coins are always fun to find, and this one was no exception.

Sac.webp

Shiny isn’t she? I used her as my “scale” coin in the rest of the photos for this post as well. Well, it was nice to have something familiar with the rest of the oddities I bagged today. Unusual to weird to “whatzits”, I had it all today. First off, try this one on for size. I might need to slow down before I get going too fast after all. Someone lost the Pedal Cover off their brakes. Well, the Parking Brake anyway I think.

Brakes.webp

Yeah, that was another eyeball find... as were the other plastic things... Like the bubbles, the loverboys and the critters...

Plastic.webp

That’s not to say all the eyeball finds were plastic, like the wine bottle foil caps, there were metal objects found, both with the old mark one eyeballs and the detector in some cases. Like the Inflator needle, the pens (only one shown) and big a** paper clips.

Pens Needles Clips.webp

Most of today’s finds were found with the detector though, and dug up to boot. I found these two Whatzits not far from each other, but I don’t think they were from the same person however. I’m thinking that one is an eyepiece off of a camera or something similar, and one is half of a locket perhaps. Anyone have any suggestions?

At three different shade trees on the hillsides I found three different toys. A toy truck that didn’t have much luck, a toy plane that crashed if not burned, and a toy Mini-Sub? Or at least that’s what it says on the bottom of the green rocket looking car.

Rides.webp

Of course, you can’t have rides without keys to get them going. Well someone did, at least two different parties lost keys sometime in the past, be it last year or several years ago. Not to worry, I found the keys. Now... who lost them?

Keys Comp.webp

Dooney & Bourke ? I thought they made purses and stuff? Well the “All Weather Leather” touted on the key fob certainly didn’t weather the dirt very well did it? But then, I don’t think it was intended to be buried was it? The scrap and crap wigging out my detector was probably not supposed to have been buried either, but it was, and I dug a lot of it up. There’s only a handful here in the photos, but I put nearly five times that amount in the garbage can in the park..

Scrap.webp

Not all of the “other metal” I dug up was scrap though. I found some SILVER! Okay, so it’s not a silver coin, dang it, but it’s Sterling silver nonetheless. But what is it? At first I thought I’d found the proverbial silver spoon... hey... look at all the evidence of wine consumption... but no, it wasn’t a spoon. Perhaps a small Seafood fork, like the little doohickeys used to probe and pry out bits of crab and lobster? Nope... looks more like a fancy little devilish pitchfork to me. Anyone out there have a clue for me?

Forkcomp.webp

Whatever it is, it was a surprise to find. A Pleasant surprise to find silver of course, but a surprise all the same. Surprising too, was the amount of all the clad that I bagged, when I finally got around to sorting and counting it all out. WOW! I know it was actually a two day total, but it’s still a nice amount. More than paid for my gas travelling to and from the park. Wee Doggies! Another nice contribution to the Vacation fund indeed.

Clad.webp

And to top it all off. On my way home from the park, to take my wife to the promised lunch and movie, I drove past the county baseball park (close but not connected), and it was PACKED wall to wall with the boys... and girls... of summer, playing baseball. Cars parked three deep in the grass because the lots were full. Tents and camp and lawn chairs set up everywhere. Concession trailers in several places. Yeah, I’ll be back there soon! You GOT to GO where the PEOPLE are... or WERE. Wonder what I’ll find on that trip? Tune in later and I’ll share the whole lurid story and all my finds. Till then, get out there and have some fun! And as always...

Nice finds. The fork looks like a lemon fork and I think it was made by Whiting. The key fob comes with the Dooney & Bourke purse. most people leave them attached to the purse.

Lemon Fork huh? Guess it's something that was overlooked in my upbringing. But then, my family didn't really do tea or even have a tea service for that matter... Cool. Thanks Cranky!

Hey Frodov , great adventures ! I will offer the suggestion (guess) that your fork is a pickle
fork , would certainly be appropriate for a picnic basket on the 4th of July . Nice find !
Argentium.

Awesome sterling fork-like thing! I'd take that over a silver coin any day! (well, like a merc or barber dime... I'd probably take some kind of Capped Bust coinage over it, haha)

Nice digs as usual Frodov! Hope the weather in Central KY has turned a bit cooler for ya. Been baking up here in the norther part of the Bluegrass.

Congrats!

Yeah BOY! Compared to earlier in the week the last couple of days have been HEAVENLY! Oh, it's still warm to be sure, but not that unbearable debillitating oppressively Humid as a sauna Heat. And there is a breeze blowing that actually dries what sweat you do perspire and cools you off! Oh MAN! That's HEAVEN! <grin> I even had to get under the covers in bed last night it's been so cool the last couple of nights! <blushing> Okay, yeah... I'll have to admit it now... I'm "HOT" in bed... <blushing>

~AHEM~ Okay, back to the subject at hand. The little rain we had earlier in the week softened up the ground a bit down here too, that's always a plus for this hobby. Hope you get out and have a little fun in the sun today my friend.

The PARK item is a pad off of a golf cart brake petal. Its at the top, and you press it down to lock the petal in the down position, setting the brakes.

Golf cart huh? Okay. I guess that would make sense. The Parks Department uses several of them to run around the park grounds during events like that on the 4th of July. Guess someone kicked it off by accident or something. <shrug> Thanks Gunny!

very nice finds, I love finding shiny gold coins, no matter what they are made out of.

Boy Don't I WISH it was gold! Hardly though, and that little Sacagawea dollar wasn't even shiny when I dug it up. Like I said in my post, I really wasn't sure what it was at first because it was so crusty and dirt caked. <shrug> But a little elbow grease and some brillo pad and it buffed right up to a nice shine. <grin>

All finds are great That lemon fork is awesome.

Why thanks there muleskinner. I thought it was pretty neat when I dug it up, just didn't know what the heck it was. It turned out to be a learning experience. I no know that "propper" tea services come with separate dainty little forks for spearing and holding lemon wedges. <grin> Before I dug up my little fork and posted here at TreasureNet I was not even aware that such a thing existed. COOL!

Why thank you Bill... I always enjoy sharing my finds and my adventures. I will keep at it then. <grin> Just wish I had more time for both... making finds (detecting) and sharing said finds by posting here. But you know what they say... "Life" is what happens when you make other plans. <shrug> C'est la vie.

Nice photos and interesting text, Frodov.

I've heard the old adage, "When life give you lemons, make lemonade." But I've never seen a lemon fork before either. Good to see you take lemon with your sterling.
