I was walking through my father in laws plowed field yesterday
when I noticed something laying just on the outside of one of
the rows and picked it up and took it in to show Dave and he
thinks its an Indian spear weight or some ceremonial piece.
What do you all think it could be, its about 6 inches long and
is made out of some type of rock with circles in it.
Better pictures will follow when my sister in law brings my camera back.

My father in law thinks its a indian spear weight. :dontknow:
I didnt realize the pics was dark until I posted them
and forgot the cardinal rule, I didnt put anything in
for a size reference, but I will when i get my camera back.

Re: Indian spear weight ?

Geez Allen!
I have been searching for 20 minutes now for a match.
Whatever you have discovered may very well make the banner.
I think that is a very nice well preserved relic. What a beautiful piece :icon_thumleft:

Re: Indian spear weight ?

Wow! Looks like you have a pick bannerstone. I have only ever found pieces :'( Believed to be weights used for the atlatl but there is an ongoing controversy about their original use. Sounds like it might be banded slate since you mentioned circles in the stone. Not an expert just an occasional artifact hunter for 15yrs. It would pay to get it checked out, they can bring several hundred. Nice Find.

Re: Indian spear weight ?

allen, post this over in the Artifacts section. Nice find :icon_thumleft:

I'd say banner stone aswell. And a nice one at that Allen. Get a positive ID and better picks and You'll be on the banner for sure.

Re: Indian spear weight ?

I agree with the ID as a bannerstone.... how fitting it would be if it made banner, as it is pretty nice as far as bannerstones go...

Re: Indian spear weight ?

Is this item stone or iron?

The Banner Stones I know of are stone and date from 500 to 1800 AD. They range from 4 to 8 inches. Anyway, most believe they were ceremonial pieces.

Most known types:
knobbed
hourglass
shuttle
double cresent
bow tie
bottle
butterfly
sugar loaf

badger

Re: Indian spear weight ?

My friend Tom identified it like others on here as
a banner stone and made out of banded slate.
I will get better pics as soon as my sister in law
brings my camera back, but it might be several days.

Re: Indian spear weight ?

sweet, sweet banner stone, Allen!
can't wait to see some more pics.

Re: Indian spear weight ?

If I were you Allen, find someone else to take pictures for you and get these photos up soon. This could be your chance to make banner and I would like to see that as a reward to all of the thousands of kind replies you have made on this forum over the years. I'm ready to vote banner, just show us the pics.

Re: Indian spear weight ?

Bannerstone and a nice delicate shaped on at that. Probably took a long time to make and when it was lost the maker uttered several Native American swear words.
Killer find and probably worth quite a bit. Let me put it in terms a coin hunter would understand. That is the same to an Indian relic hunter as finding a gold coin is to a coin hunter. Very rare and a "heart racing, yelling, happy dance" sort of find that not many make.

Re: Indian spear weight ? better pic

A pic of the banner stone from my cellphone
with a nickel for size reference.
