Interesting Button Find, Old Military, Like None I Have Ever Seen

Here is an interesting button that I dug up on eBay. It has the appearance of a civil war era button, but I have been unsuccessful in determining the age. I have found NOTHING on the maker. Has anyone ever seen anything like it? Any info would be appreciated.

Here is what I know:

* This particular button is Coat sized, same as Civil War Eagle buttons etc.
* Button front says "DEO VOLENTE" meaning "God Willing" and of Latin origin
* Reverse side of button says "Waring & Hubbard N.Y."

Please Help! I have Ten of them, and one is a cuff, but all identical. STUMPED!:BangHead:

Instead of searching for the Deo Volente, you might try searching Maltese Cross inside of and open laurel wreath. Lots of info. Hope this helps.

The first thing I came to was this Virginia Military School button. Similar wreath, and cross.

You might also look at the Knights of Malta. It would appear that all of these elements...cross, wreath, deo volente are associated with them. I understand these buttons were made in NY, but if you can't find anything else, then this may be another avenue. I saw your post on the military school and I suppose that its possible, but its a totally different kind of cross. @Papa bear, I saw that about Illinois U as well, but couldn't seem to go any further with it. I'll keep looking when I can, I am rather intrigued myself.

i appreciate you guys helping, I searched all day today and still nothing. I found some info on the "Southern Cross of Honor" maybe these were given to Civil War vets?

Brad, I found it. The button is from Episcopal High School in Virginia. The school is still open and currently known as VES. I actually have several friends that went there in the 1980's. Its and all boys prep school 9-12 grades. I can't say if your button is CW period or post war but there is one on The Relic Man's website with no back mark that he claims in 1850's. Ridgeway Civil War Archive Buttons from Virginia, schools and academies.. Cool find, was there any cloth around all of those buttons? Surely you found a whole uniform worth of buttons.

@ screwy, that is the button I was using as an example, the button that I was asking for identification is at the top, the ones with lots of gold. The dug button IS the same one from Harry's website, because that is where I borrowed the picture from. Thanks for the help, maybe someday we can place a positive ID on these odd buttons.
