Here is a curious coin... it is an e'cu (crown) dated 1716 and is one of the first coins of Louis XV (then age 6). These coins are called "Vertugadin", based on the circle on the reverse which was reministic of the hoops in a woman's skirt of the time. If you look at the coin there is a lot going on all over it. It is a restrike of an earlier silver e'cu of Louis XIV and has all sorts of traces still apparent. France at the time was going through unstable currency fluctuations... so one result was to take a silver e'cu of Louis XIV, valued at 3 livres, and restrike it as Louis XV valued at 5 livres.
