My Family and I were going through some belongings of a deceased relative and came across this seemingly old, copper coin. It is approximately 1/2” across. There is a faint image of a face on one side. I can’t make out the other image. I know nothing about coins. My relative was from Prince Edward Island and Nantucket Island. The coin was found in with English coins and was obviously part of an amateur collection. Thanks for your help.

Looks Roman to me.......assuming it's genuine.

I hear ya. How can one tell?

Look for a local coin dealer that has some expertise in ancient coins and get their opinion. If you post some nice closeup photos on here, you'll probably get a few more opinions, but, it's hard to verify authenticity by just a photo unless it's obviously a fake. Nothing I see hear makes me think it's an obvious fake, but, the wear pattern and finish makes me uncertain and a bit suspicious.

Looks like one of the late Roman emperors, like Theodosius, Valens, Constantius II, or Constantius Gallus. I'd guess Constantius II (317-361 A.D., co- Western Emperor with Julian). These are difficult to identify exactly because the minting methods were crude, condition is usually poor, and there were a lot of mints each making variations. But I got you within a hundred years or so! Old! Roughly 1,650 years old.
