I bought this pendant and am having a hard time identifying the stone because of the back. It is set in 10k gold and the front of the stone looks like malachite but the back is metal with a hold drilled in the center and is engraved Feb 14 1953.

The hole may have been drilled sometime in its past to help remove the stone. Nice Piece!

Oh the hole is to let light come through so the stone will glow or shine or be better seen.

It is not malachite. I do not see any karat marks, and it looks like there is flaking to the "gold". I think it is likely costume jewelry and the stone may actually be glass. The hole in the back is not to let light through, it is way too small for that and since a pendant lies flat against a neck or garment no light would come through anyways.
