This was found about 2 inches deep on my property in rural East Texas - Montgomery County, about 50 miles north-norhwest of Houston. It is iron (or steel); i.e., magnetic. Opening appears too small to be link in chain. Suspect some sort of belt or strap went through it. Any ideas of what it might be and how used would be greatly appreciated. I am a novice.

I would guess that it is a chain link, just that it was used beyond its strength and was stretched.
