Hi everyone, first post.

One of my buddies talked me into going detecting at my neighbours house as he'd found a bayonet from the War of 1812 era on his property. I used my friends backup detector and found this. We are not quite sure what it is. I thought it was a mounted bottle opener. The neighbour didn't think so because of the square carriage bolt hole at the top. He thinks it's a tiedown or anchor point for a wagon.

Any ideas?

Please post a side view pic. Also just below the square hole I see 3 (or 4) raised areas. What are those? Anything found nearby? Describe the property (age of the home, is/was it a farm, etc.

The neighbours house has been there since the early 1900's. There were other metal items found nearby such as a shovel handle, nails, a gear most likely from a cuckoo clock, oil cap from an engine, etc.

Thanks for the extra pics and info. Looking at the side view, it seems if it were a flag holder, the flag would be at a high angle - so not sure that is it. Given the square hole, a carriage bolt could be used to fasten that end to something and prevent turning. Based on that and the other things found nearby, I wonder if it is off a vehicle or carriage.

I think it is some sort of a tie-down from a wagon or piece of equipment. The square hole would be for a stove-bolt with a rounded head. This hole would bolt the piece to a wood frame of a wagon, equipment etc. The round hole would be the head of another bolt. This bolt end would hold a leather strap passed through the gap. The leather strap would have holes in it, like a belt. The strap could pass through a gap in the wagon boards. Possibly a simple tie-down.
