I have, in the past had some trouble with iron showing up as coins. I tried different tactics to get a better ID. More discrimination is one option, but you lose depth. In areas with light to moderate iron, if not overwhelming, you can dig a few. But if iron is present everywhere, there is another trick I use, although not foolproof. I have a strong magnet mounted on the top of the handle of my digging tool. If it is shallow iron you can get a response pulling it. If it is deep, then sometimes it will respond, sometimes not. It has helped me in certain situations, and saved some time and digging. If your handle is wood then a screw into the top will hold it.
If aluminum or steel, you may want to epoxy it to the top. HH rockhound
