I found these at my colonial wood site this afternoon. I have no clue on the iron piece, it looks like some type of guard. The other bronze item looks like a sea shell. There is no sign of a shank, but it could be part of a two piece button. I have found more than 50 buttons at this site. Any help is appreciated!

Depending on the size, I think the first iron thing is part of an old rusty plane, a woodworking tool. Monty

From the way too many iron things I have removed from their resting place, I have found about 95% of them that have a square hole are plow points.

As far as the other item, how do you know it is bronze? Doesn't look it to me. Patina not quite right. Feel on the inside for ANY sign of a "Bump" that would indicate the attachment of a shaft for a button.

Could be bronze or copper. IDK how to tell the difference. As far as the remains of a shank, the dent in the middle has gone through the metal to the other side creating a bumb. I doubt this bump is from a shank. Thats why I think possibly the front of a 2 piece. My buttons and from the site span from the late 1600's to the mid 1800's.

The story is in the patina. Find something small and black like a piece of felt or a cap that has a flat finish. Put something white next to it about the same size. When you "adjust" the picture, make sure the black stays really black (not washed out or lightened) and the white is still really white (no tint). Then you can be relatively certain the color of the object's patina is correct.

A picture of the inside of the object would also be nice.

Once we have that, I think we can get you further along.

If the inside of the object is not that important to you, take a small sharp object (needle) and make a very small scratch that you can observe with a loop or other magnifier in a place that is not too obvious.. If it looks golden, it is either brass, bronze, or copper.

I thought about a plow point too until I saw the side view and the handle looking thing. I'm just guessing from some other things I have seen identified here on the forum. Monty
