Iron ring of some sort,, found Daniel Boone heritage trail.. 6-8 inches down

Anyone know what this might be. Im curious this is my first find an looks to be pretty old, found in the Appalachia mountains on the Daniel Boone trail. The iron is really flaky an chipping off

old metal 5 gallon buckets had a folding handle on them with a spout. looks like one of those handles.
