🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Iron squared lid to what though

At first thought maybe a stove damper, but all I've searched and found are round.. then I thought maybe a match safe cover but they seem to large or had a lip on them and decorative. This was found along with some of my civil war relics. One end it looks to have where it locked into something to open and close if that makes sense

I was searching and it's almost identical to some Columbia iron co lock safes( desk top size)
