Is 8" too wide for scoop?

Been eyeballing the scrap yard for stuff to build a scoop. Today I found an aluminum tank that was used as a compressed soda dispenser for Pepsi products. Thought at first it was a SCUBA tank but not. Thing is 8" diameter so is that too wide? Could probably get a foot scoop with long handle off the bottom end and have enough left for a hand scoop. Not sure on the thickness yet as I'm waiting for your advice before cutting it. It will still hold air so I might salvage it for a hookah reserve in the future if no good for a scoop.

Is 8" too wide for scoop? Oh yea

I use a six inch in diameter scoop and it's heavy as hell when it's filled with beach sand. Eight inch may be too much volume.
The soda kegs your talking about are probably stainless. I use them to keg my home brew. I don't think the steel is thick enough to use as a scoop.
Good luck

Depends how fine the sand is in your area, and how deep you intend to scoop. 8" is big, but I say give it a try. Besides......What is the real cost??????? HH Gayle

I built my scoop from exactly the same thing and it works GREAT!!! It gets really heavy at times, but I almost always get stuff on the first scoop when others are working their butts off digging like crazy. I wish I could find another of the tanks and if you don't want it I will gladly buy it from you.

Re: Is 8" too wide for scoop?

no i made one i use all the time its 15".weight 5lbs aluminum looks like a hyuge nuttal

Re: Is 8" too wide for scoop?

Hey I see the Beach Brute Scoop CrackBadger uses is 8-1/2" wide. Almost cut into the tank today but thought I would wait and see if anyone else posted. This tank is definitely aluminum. Found where is says so on the top side. Probably get four scoops out of it built like the Beach Brute but I got a different idea ;D

Hangingfor8, is yours full round or half round?

Re: Is 8" too wide for scoop?

Arkie, I use a scoop that is 9" wide and usually get the target on first try.

make sure there isn't any pressure in the tank b4 you cut it!

No pressure in the tank. Thanks. I almost hate to cut it up but such sacrifices have to be made ;D

Still undecided to make it full or half round. Half will be lighter but will require more fabrication. Full will weigh more but could also cut most of it out, leave stout frame for structure and install welded wire mesh for the strainer. Hmmm... :-\

mines a half circle

Re: Is 8" too wide for scoop?

Hey that's cool. Did you make it?

Re: Is 8" too wide for scoop?

I use the Beach Brute II it is 8.5 inch wide, and if they made one wider I would get it. When your fighting the surf the faster you get the target the better.

I like that stainless scoop but would also like an off set handle like on the Beach Br*t.

Re: Is 8" too wide for scoop?
