Is Metal detecting allowed in Mexico

A friend is going to Mexico and he would like to know if he can take a detector there and do some MDing?? Are permits required etc.? :?:

Well my town has a large Mexican population. An awful lot of the time when I'm hunting guys come up and and ask me where to get one so they can take it home to dig up the revolutionay (Mexican) war caches hidden on their home properties there. I always ask them if it would be ok.

They always tell me the same thing, why wouldn't it be? So the Mexicans who work around here think there's no problem with it. And it never fails, every one tells me there is a jar or box or bag of gold and silver buried on the home property by grandpa or his brother or cousin before getting killed by the bad guys or wounded and drunk and forgetful....

Two different guys have told me they were able to move here because they found posthole caches. To listen to the stories, it would seem there's gold/silver buried everywhere down there. Not familiar with the rules however.

I live in South Texas, and met with a Garrett dealer in Brownsville. He says alot of Mexican nationals have come to his little store to order high end units for detecting in their home towns.

I, myself, have gone to mexico to use my detector also, and haven't had any problems. I do use it only in the area that I am staying, unless its the beach. Other than that, Mexican coins, are pretty weird in their makeup I think. I did the air test with a handfull of modern mexican coins, and most if not all sound like pull tabs or are not heard due setting the discriminate too high.

Hey Kool007, find a lot of Mexican coins up here. Not familiar with the coinage, butI always get a high coin read from the $1000 and $500 coins. I figure the actual value of these coins is closer to the weight of the brass or whatever it is they are minted with and not the high value marks on them.

just to keep it simple, there is a 10:1 ratio. 10 of their pesos (mexican dollar) = 1 of USA dollar. Older Coinage, not sure about the cutoff date, but pretty much before the 80's, their coins were probably made up more of copper and steel than anything else. my mother still has a collection of 20 centavos (cents) or maybe 20 pesos that are of a solid copper and about the size of a US .50 cent piece. I am gonna try and upload a pic of some of the "modern coinage now in use in Mexico.

10:1 sounds good to me. Here's a shot of some I found this summer. I usually keep them with me because I can tell a kid to go get me some chow at La Roca while I'm hunting. They love it when I give them a Mexican $5 coin to keep for their work. You simply cannot hunt that neighborhood and resist the smells coming out of the corner mom & pop shop.

Lemme know the next time your up, I'll show you sites. As for food, can't say the same for SA. Been there, will never go back for the food. Couldn't find any good food there, in Dallas, Ft Worth... Ahh Witchita Falls. There's good cookin' there.

Yes, it's legal, and no permits are required in Federal/State land. If it's a huge treasure, you'll have split 50%/50% with the government.

In private land, you just need permission of the owner and although the law states the same percentaje (50%/50%) with the owner, any other kind of arrangement is possible.

As of the coins...

In the early 90's the monetary law took out three zeros from the currency. So the real value of the 500 and 1000 coins are 50 cents and 1 peso.
