Is there a way to detect next to fences?

I'm gonna' say "no"... but actually I'm a bit of an amateur. Although I look forward to responses from people in the know... At the beaches up in NH I get the same interference from the re-bar inside of the cement sidewalks. -Ben

Definitely..... Use a very small coil supplied by the manufactures. Garrett's is called the Super Sniper Coil and it's about 3 1/2 inches round and made for getting around very trashy areas and close to sidewalks and metal objcts. Most of the other major manufactures make these special coils too. They are not quite as deep as the normal size, but are very hot and a necessary piece of equipement if your serious about the hobby.

Yep, I learn something here every day.

Also learning your machines discrimination feature will help.

Yep, small coil is the only way to go. It puts out a very small cone shaped signal that will get right in next to a rebarred pad or a fence. Monty

I turn down my sensitivity to get closer, and sweep slower. Every now and again I'll pick up a coin this way-

Some of the old 'off-resonance' machines will go under fences as will the Jimmy Seirra 'Eliminator' (for some Whites models) coil as its top shielded. These are only a little smaller than stock coils so you don't lose to much depth.

Yes sir. You guys who said smaller coil and lower the sensitivity are on the mark. Not only will this help around metal fence post, but any metal stuck in the ground, park benches, play ground equipment, you name it.
