Detector(s) used
Tesoro Silver uMax, Fisher 1270, Minelab ExSE
May be your Settings.

Make sure you set it up as per the manual and try it again. Newly buried coins won't read well, but they will read close to the coil on BBS machines.

I bought a new Minelab SE recently and I have been practicing using it by making a coin test bed in the soil but it can't even seem to find a quarter 4 inches deep laying flat. Am I doing something wrong or do you think there might be some sort of defect?

It could be your settings or it could be welcome to the real world. I have a Minelab Explorer II in the works for the future so I'll see it in action first hand. I suspect it (like the SE) will be a good machine. Will it "leap tall buildings with a single bound" and be "faster than a speeding bullet?"...probably not!

Over the last couple of months I've tested some 4 or 5 machines and they were all good and all were about the same in depth. I strongly suspect I'll find the same true of the Ex.II.

We all get feed a lot of banana oil these days.

Hope it does work out to be truly super deep and detect dimes at 10-20 inches like some claim but I wouldn't bet on it. My guess is, it won't be much different than all the others except maybe just much more difficult to learn.

You'll see and I will when mine arrives. Wish us both luck.

Well i have had mine for 6 years and was a dedicated Fisher person before i bought mine....And yes i am one of those people whom has posted about the depth you can get with minelabs..because i have experienced it.
But like all detectors you have to learn it and practice.I was actually surprised at how easily i learned to use mine...
As already stated check your setting and try again..also if you are using headphones make sure they are stereo and not mono..monophones do not work on the explorers.
Good luck and enjoy your new detector!!!!

I guess the detector might be working fine after all. I dug up a zinc canning lid that was probably 14" or so deep. I'm going to try to make a new test garden in a different spot and see if I have better luck this time.

Brent,

If you have a fresh test garden, try soaking it down with a hose. I've read that when the coins are first buried, they won't read nearly as well for a while. Lots of water will help them settle in, and make conductivity with the soil. Brine water is even better, but will probably kill any vegetation!

Hello Brent,
One question; what is your sensitivity setting?
I keep mine maxed out, adjusted to 32 and only hunt in ALL METAL MODE (CLEARing all SELECT options) with IRON MASK set to 22. You'll quickly learn to differentiate the various sounds with use of your SE.

You may wish to try displaying SMARTFIND, concentrating on digging targets shown in the UPPER RIGHT corner and LOWER LEFT corner (of the ACCEPTED area) at least, for a while. I find the ID screen very accurate but always dig those iffy sounds.

I honestly believe the fault is in your settings if you are not able to detect "ANY" quarter at 4 inches; more time and experience should solve all your problems with the SE.

***I came back to make another suggestion.
You may wish to always ground balance (NOISE REDUCTION process) at the beginning of your hunt or when changing coils. Be sure to turn IRON MASK to OFF to be certain absolutely nothing is beneath your coil. Also, move away from iron structures or overhead power lines as it's been my experience either can interfere with the balancing process.

Good digging!
