What do you think, is this a button? I found this item in the woods where there used to be a farm. Not sure of the metal, but it has sort of a bluish hue and feels crumbly, so I'm thinking pewter or some sort of composite. It has some decorations around the rim, but no writing that I can see. There is no shank, and I'm not sure if there ever was one. There seems to be a hole in the back's middle, but I'm not sure if that means anything. So is this a button? If so, any ideas how old? If not a button, what is it? I kind of think this will go in the unidentified junk pile, but I am hoping differently. Thanks so much for your ideas and insights.
EDIT: I also posted this on the What is It forum. Got a nice reply from smokeythecat, for which I am most grateful. Here are his comments....
"It is a cast pewter button, a civilian pattern and date to the period of the American Revolution. Do NOT put in the junk box. It could go a little earlier than that, and do yourself a favor. Mix Elmer's glue with 50/50 water and coat the button to keep it from crumbling to dust in a couple years. It has a very nice design on it."
