A friend found this today at a Civil War camp which gave up a variety of buttons (including a beautiful Mississippi local) and lead. Can anybody help ID this brass piece? It looks similar to sword belt hangers, but I'm hoping a Treasure Net expert can help confirm and/or provide additional information. Thanks much.

Hi USNFLYR
It appears to me to be very similar to a Civil War Knapsack J Hook!

I say door latch too. Not a sword belt hanger. When I did living history, my general officer's sword belt was an exact reproduction of John F. Reynolds belt. My sword hanger hook was similar to #9 in the illustration below.

Just for comparison, here is a pic of the belt. The hanger can be seen to the right.

Good news it is old and appears to be hand forged so probably CW period.
Thanks, Tnmountains. I agree this is hand wrought (or possibly cast), and I'm not sure that screen doors latches would be made of such solid brass. My friend says he never finds ANY modern trash, and in fact, the history of the site dates back to military occupation starting in 1698. So maybe even pre-Civil War, which is why we aren't seeing anything exactly the same in the Civil War reference books? Thanks for chiming in.
