Is this a military button?

Got this in a field that's yielded relics from the 1700s to mid 1900s. It's slightly larger than a U.S. nickel. It's in pretty bad shape but hopefully there's enough to ID its purpose. On the back I can see IMPERIAL, but that's about it. Any input would be great. Thanks!

That thing looks really familiar I just can't place it. I am thinking very old Navy button is that an anchor at the bottom?

A more thorough answer is sure to arrive soon, but I'm pretty sure war of 1812 will be in the explanation.

I believe it's a GI61 Militia, 16 stars with rope edging, pre-1820, but I'll defer to sharper eyes.
