🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Neep help identifying another U.S. item

[Dr Plugs]

This find is not mine, but a buddies. It was dug in a field where many items ranging from mid 1700s-1900s have been found.

The U.S lettering looks kinda "primitive" to me when put next to a couple known U.S. military finds. Appears to have been attached to something. Sorry for the bad pic, he didn't have a chance to clean it better.
