I found this across from a 1700s inn. Sadly the owners will not let me hunt it, as of yet. So I got the next best thing. Permission across from it. I only searched a small area, as I did not remember a creek splits the property. I am debating if I should cross the creek. Anyway I did find this. To me it looks like a 1/2 cut copper coin, but I am not sure. I can't get any dates or any id off of it. I am just going by the patina of the object, and that is has a ridge around the outside, like a coin would have.

Nice old copper find, congratulations! :occasion14:

Sure looks like it. It has the edge. Congrats

Pretty cool! Congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Thanks. I hate that I can't even get a date, but I figure it is at least 1800s. Which would knock off one of my bucket list items. Find an 1800s coin. I whish I could date it to the 1700s, which is a possibility given the age of the inn.

Cool find! Take a toothpick or bamboo skewer (my favorite) to it. There may be some detail under the crud. You aren't killing it, you don't know what coin it is.

It's a cut copper-alloy coin/token, date unknown. But will await the outcome.....

Great find put it under a high powered microscope . And he@@@@@@@ yes you need to cross the creek no question . Well done

Funny you say that. My wife remained me that we bought the girls a microscope last year.

I put the coin in a lemon juice bath last night, and quite a bit of the green came off. I hope to do that again tonight. I think I was able to see some starts on the outer edge.

So just gave the coin a once over, and I noticed it has reeded edges. So this puts it after 1792. So I am one step closer.

Cool find, Congrats!!

Post the diameter of the half you found and it might help with narrowing it down as to what denomination and years.

Looks right to me. It would help if you could post the diameter and weight.

Huge break through guys. Several lemon juice baths, and a little work with a tooth brush has yielded a state, and a date. You can see in the upper half "New Hampshi" and the date or, beginning of the date 1788. What is throwing me is most dates are on the bottom, centered, not off to the side. There is also some writing on the bottom, but all I can make out is the letter E. The diameter of the coin is .96. Almost an inch. Not sure of weight. I don't have anything that can measure that small. I have taken it in to Photoshop to try and pull more out, but I think I have gotten out of it all it will give up.
I added a outlined one just to see if you all agree.

Half a New Hampshire State quarter:

That's certainly unusual.

I think you are right, I matched it up to one I my kid has, and if I turn it just the right angle, that is what it is. Crap. I knew something was off about it, and that is it. What I thought to be cut in half, is nothing more than cut at an angle. Bubble popped.
