I have found a one of those in a camp. I wrote my name with it and it was cool to think the guy who did that before me was most likely a Soldier.

Many times I have dug a relic [did it mostly with my buttons] and sat down and just thought.

Only asking because I dont know,but assume this is all lead and was hand shaped this way and used to mark on paper for writing?

Mason and Mckee Civil War Projectiles II says carved lead to be used as pencil.

That is correct. My other brother used to write letters using a lead pencil.

I have found them with marks every 1/4 inch , I assumed it was for snipping off bullets to drop into a mold... maybe I had a pencil, but why the markings at intervals
?
