Is this an arrowhead? Please help!

My son found this on the school field today during recess. It seems to be a worn arrowhead. It is tapered, thicker at the rear. Is it just a rock that naturally mimicked an artifact? The Lenapes resided in this area for thousands of years. Please help ID.

I don't think it's an arrowhead my friend. judging from the picture there are no signs of knapping.

Although not an arrowhead, it could be hematie. It is heavier than other stones and if it is scratched on another object such as concrete or another stone, it would leave a red streak. Hematite was used by indigenous people as a red paint. The stones are scraped against other stones to produce the red powder, and mixed with fats or saliva to make the paint. I have found several of these hematite "buttons", that plainly show the grinding marks, or flats areas.

I agree it's not a 'worn' point. I find a lot of hemetite around here too, rubbed, worn-- and sometimes actual points, and they're BEAUTIFUL! But keep in mind too, that a knapped point still shows knapping even after being in the water, sand etc. I've found a couple points on the shores of the Chesapeake- where they REALLY get tossed around-- and like sea-glass, they soften out quite a bit, but you can still see the knapping and the very obvious shape. I call them 'sea-points', and although not perfect, they are unique and beautiful in they're own right. Keep looking, good luck, and happy hunting! Abbey
