Afternoon,

Looks like a work in progress...perhaps they were making an Evans or some other type of double notch and got side tracked.

HH,

Atlantis

Im with Atlantis, I think that at one time it was going to be a point, but It does look like a elephant, or mammoth.hmmmmm

since there are no elephants in the new world, and the mammoths were gone centuries ago...
i agree it is a piece in progress...i find a lot of those lying about the desert.

Spokeshave. It's for working arrows ? I have a few examples around here at the house I think.

I'm going with "wooly mammoth" 'cause thats what I want it to be. In your first post thats what came to mind and I am sticking with my first thought...d2

it's yer rock. ;D
and it does look like a mammoth..

I think someone was having fun a round a camp fire kinda like us whittling with a knife Just think if a mastodon or woolly it would be the first of it kind on a modern site. Maybe he saw it in a pictograph? He would have to be very good to do those fractures that for the piece. It is an artifact and its very cool regardless. I have not seen many effigy's made that way.

Sure looks like a mammoth. Don't know if it was intended to or not but whatever, its a pretty cool artifact.

It is way to small to be a spokeshave for an arrow shaft in my opinion. Compared it to the quarter.

Is the right edge shown in the picture worked/flaked to a sharp edge?
