Since it is cracked and was found on a beach, I would say it is an accumulation of iron encrustation. Iron things "grow" these over the years. They just keep getting bigger and bigger the longer they are in the water.

My 2c.

I was told by some experts that this is part of a canister shot (wrought iron). It is probably civil war or older.

I think it is Very unlikely that a solid, small shot like cannister or grape would've broken apart on impact. I have never found a frag that small, and I don't know anyone else who has either. Shells with live charges fragment--solid shots don't usually.

It could be grape shot, I was just thinking about a show I saw on tv once that showed some cannonballs that were recovered from a wreck in salt water, and the person was talking about how they will deteriorate and fall apart if left out to dry with out proper preservation. could be thats what happened?
